Moving Money Checklist

8 Weeks Out

Lock in the big costs early — movers get expensive and scarce close to the date.

• Set a total moving budget: local moves run $500–$2,500; long-distance $2,500–$8,000+ with movers
• Get written in-home or video-survey quotes from at least 3 movers and check their DOT license and reviews
• Ask your employer about relocation reimbursement if the move is job-related
• Compare full-service movers vs. a container (PODS-style) vs. DIY truck rental — price all three
• Book the mover or truck — mid-month, mid-week dates are often 20–30% cheaper than month-end weekends
• Give your landlord written notice per your lease (usually 30–60 days) to protect your deposit
• Review your lease's move-out requirements: cleaning, patching, carpet — line up what's needed
• Start a declutter pass and sell what you won't move — every cubic foot costs money
• Photograph your current place's condition now, and again when empty, for the deposit claim

4 Weeks Out

The address-change sweep. Missing one causes late fees and lost mail.

• File USPS mail forwarding (usps.com, $1.10 verification fee) starting on your move date
• Update your address with your bank and credit card issuers
• Update your address with your employer's HR/payroll so your W-2 goes to the right place
• File IRS Form 8822 (change of address) or plan to update it on your next return
• Notify your auto insurer — your premium changes with your ZIP code and must match where the car is garaged
• Notify health, dental, and life insurance companies of the new address
• Update or cancel renters/home insurance effective on the move date (see the After section for the rebind)
• Update subscriptions and deliveries: Amazon, streaming billing addresses, meal kits, gym membership
• Update your address on retirement and brokerage accounts
• Schedule utility shutoff at the old place for the day after you leave, and turn-on at the new place for the day before you arrive
• Pay any outstanding utility balances so they don't go to collections at an address you've left
• Transfer or request records: school, pediatrician, vet, and pharmacy prescriptions

Moving Week

• Confirm the mover's arrival window, total price, and payment method in writing
• Withdraw cash for tips: $4–$8 per mover per hour is customary for a good crew
• Do a final meter reading photo (electric, gas, water) at the old place
• Keep valuables, documents, chargers, and a few days of essentials with you — never on the truck
• Photograph the empty, cleaned old place for your deposit claim
• Return keys, garage remotes, and parking passes, and get a receipt or written confirmation
• Give your landlord your forwarding address in writing — most states require it for deposit return
• Note the deposit deadline: most states require return within 14–30 days

After the Move

The audits people skip — this is where the money leaks.

• Update your driver's license and vehicle registration — most states require it within 30 days of moving
• Register to vote at the new address
• Rebind renters or homeowners insurance at the new address if you haven't — a gap in coverage is a real risk ($15–$30/month for renters)
• Re-shop auto insurance entirely — a new ZIP is the best excuse to get 3 fresh quotes
• Audit your first full utility bills against the old place and adjust your budget
• Shop internet providers at the new address instead of auto-transferring — new-customer promos often save $20–$40/month
• Chase your old security deposit if it hasn't arrived by the state deadline
• Update your address on your credit reports' lenders you missed — check statements for anything still going to the old address
• Keep moving receipts — some states still allow moving-expense deductions, and reimbursed employer moves need documentation
• Set up a new emergency fund line for the new home's costs (higher rent, HOA, or maintenance)
