What a panel does and how capacity works
Your panel is rated in amps -- commonly 100, 150, or 200 amps for modern homes -- which is the total electrical capacity available to the house. - Insurance and inspection: some insurers won't write or renew policies on hazardous panel types, which can force the upgrade regardless of function.
When 'you need a new panel' isn't true
Not every upgrade recommendation is warranted. A panel that's simply old but a safe brand, properly wired, not overloaded, and free of damage may be perfectly fine -- age alone isn't a defect. Sometimes what's needed is a subpanel to add capacity for a specific area, not a full replacement. Sometimes a full panel just needs a tandem breaker or a cleanup, not a swap. Because the work is expensive and homeowners can't easily evaluate it, get a second opinion from an independent licensed electrician (not one attached to whoever's selling you solar or an EV charger) when a big upgrade is proposed without clear signs of a problem.
