When most people shop for a car, they compare two numbers: the sticker price and the monthly payment. Both are nearly useless for deciding which car is cheaper to own. A $32,000 sedan can cost you less over five years than a $28,000 one, and a car with a $60-lower monthly payment can drain thousands more from your account by the time you sell it. The only comparison that tells the truth is total cost of ownership: every dollar the car pulls out of your life across the years you'll keep it, added up and divided by nothing. The seven buckets of ownership cost
A complete TCO model has seven line items. Miss one and your ranking can flip. The trick is that the buckets people ignore — depreciation and insurance — are usually the two largest, while the bucket everyone obsesses over — fuel — is often fourth or fifth.
- Depreciation: the car's purchase price minus its resale value at the end of your holding period. Almost always the biggest single cost.
- Financing: total interest paid over the loan, or the opportunity cost of the cash if you pay outright.
- Insurance: five years of premiums, which vary by hundreds of dollars a year between otherwise similar cars.
- Fuel or electricity: annual miles divided by efficiency, times the price per unit.
- Maintenance and repairs: scheduled service plus a realistic repair reserve that rises as the warranty expires.
- Taxes, registration, and fees: sales tax up front, then annual registration, which some states tie to the car's value.
- Consumables specific to the car: tires, and for some vehicles, premium fuel or specialized service that quietly adds up.
How to estimate each bucket
- 1Depreciation
Look up each candidate's projected resale value at your holding period using a residual-value guide or historical data for the same model three-to-five years older. Subtract from purchase price. This single number decides most comparisons.
- 2Financing
Use your real pre-approved APR and term. Multiply the monthly payment by the number of months, then subtract the amount financed to isolate total interest. For cash buyers, multiply the purchase price by a conservative investment return you're giving up.
- 3Insurance
Get an actual quote for each specific car — not a category guess. Multiply the annual premium by five. A performance trim or a theft-prone model can cost $600+ more per year than its plain sibling.
- 4Running costs
Estimate annual miles, divide by each car's real-world efficiency, and multiply by local fuel or electricity prices. Add a maintenance reserve: roughly $600–900 a year for a mainstream car in years one to three, rising to $1,200–1,800 as it ages out of warranty.

The two buckets that decide almost everything
Look again at the table and notice which rows separate the winner from the loser. Depreciation and insurance together account for most of the $13,000-plus spread. Fuel — the number buyers watch at the pump and argue about online — matters, but the hybrid's fuel advantage of roughly $3,600 over five years is smaller than its depreciation advantage and dwarfed by the European SUV's insurance and repair penalties. This is the recurring lesson of TCO modeling: the costs you feel most acutely are rarely the ones that decide the outcome.
Adjusting the model to your life
The template is only as good as your inputs. A few adjustments change the answer dramatically. If you drive 25,000 miles a year instead of 12,000, fuel and maintenance balloon and the hybrid's efficiency edge widens into a decisive lead. If you keep cars ten years instead of five, depreciation matters less per year and the reliable-but-boring car pulls further ahead, because you'll spend the back half of the decade payment-free while repair-prone cars start nickel-and-diming you. If you live somewhere with high insurance costs or property taxes on vehicles, those buckets swell and can override a lower sticker.

- Set your honest holding period based on your history, not your intentions.
- Pull an actual insurance quote per car; category averages hide four-figure differences.
- Use conservative resale values and test whether the ranking holds if you're wrong.
